Tips for Choosing Wall Decor to Finish Your Space

I think we have all been there. Staring blankly at your bare walls wondering what to do with the space.  Whether you have recently moved and are starting from scratch, or just looking to revamp your home, it can be overwhelming when you don’t know where to begin!

What you hang on your walls, and where you position them, can greatly affect the look and feel of any room in your home. With options like art, mirrors, clocks, and sculptural décor, it can be hard to decide. Sometimes you just need some direction, so I am here to help you out with some pointers to make choosing wall décor a cinch.

Size matters. When deciding on how to adorn your walls, it matters how large or small the wall is. You shouldn’t place a very large piece on a smaller wall because it will overwhelm the space. On the flip side, if you place a small piece of decor on a large wall, it will get lost and look unfinished.

Think about scale and the look you are trying to achieve. Do you picture one large piece on the wall or smaller items clustered together? As a rule of thumb, you don’t want to get too close to ceilings, floors, or adjoining walls with your wall decor as it will feel cluttered.

Size Matters. Use small objects in clusters or collages to properly fill the space.

Mix it up. For a nicely balanced space, ideally you want to choose different types of wall décor.  You would never put mirrors on every wall in a room or only use only clocks as your décor. If you choose one mirror, one clock, and one large piece of art you love, you can start there and add in pieces around those.

Think about choosing pieces that have varying textures as well. Mixing metals, glass, canvas, woods, and other materials keeps it from looking stale and boring.

Be consistent with color. Keep the color of your walls and existing furniture in mind when selecting wall décor. When it comes to art, make sure the colors compliment or contrast with the room you are placing them in.

If your walls are neutral and you want your wall décor to pop and be the focal point, choose a few key colors and stay consistent with those throughout. If your walls and furniture are the pops of color you want to be the focus, choose wall décor with more neutral tones to avoid a confused and chaotic look.

Color consistency will help your decorative accents feel cohesive

Add sconces. Wall sconces are a great, but often overlooked, addition to any room in your home. They also serve dual purpose by not only adding style but function as well. Whether you decide on a lighted option, or one with candles, they provide light and ambiance in any space. Typically, you buy these in sets, and they look beautiful placed on either side of a mantel, bed, or mirror, depending on what room you are decorating.

Don’t neglect walls. Ideally, you should have something on all the significant walls in a room. If you hang décor pieces on 3 of the 4 walls in a room, it will simply look incomplete. The exception to this is if you have a large piece of furniture, like a hutch or shelving unit that takes up most of a wall. Even on smaller walls, you can still create a family photo gallery or hang some floating shelves.

What you choose for your space is personal and varies greatly from person to person. These tips are generalized to help you make decisions, but at the end of the day, decorate your walls with pieces that bring you joy!
