How To Arrange Your Furniture

Do you love your furniture and decor pieces but can’t seem to put your finger on why your space still feels off? It is likely that you do not have them arranged in the best way for the room. Choosing the right items is important of course, but so is where you decide to place them.

Putting furniture too close together, too far apart, or at certain angles can change the entire aesthetic of a home. It is almost like having all the ingredients for a delicious meal, but not knowing how to cook it. Knowing the basics of arranging your furnishings not only creates a more visually appealing space, but it will make it undoubtedly more functional as well.

Below we have broken down how to arrange your furniture by room for you.  Every home is unique, but if you follow these general concepts, I promise you will love the outcome.

Bedroom. The bed is typically the focal point of a bedroom, so keep that in mind. If you have a larger room and a wall with windows on opposite sides, an easy place to start is to place your bed in between them. If you are short on space, you can place your bed up against a wall or in a corner, but never position the bed too close to the entryway.

Don’t forget storage by your bed. Flanking your bed with night stands on either side or adding built-in cabinetry by the head of the bed is both functional and adds style. If you have a large closet, you may not need dressers, but you still might want to add in a console table, desk, or table opposite your bed to avoid a bare bone look.

If you are looking to up the style ante, add in a plush bench at the end of your bed or an upholstered chair in the corner with an end table to use as a reading nook. Throw in some wall sconces, a chic chandelier, and some floor length curtains and you’re done!

Dining Room. Of course, it goes without saying that your dining room will center around your dining table and chairs. Mimicking the shape of the table to the shape of the room is a simple but great tip. So, if you have a rectangular space, a rectangular table will typically look best.

A nice way to add depth to your dining room is placing a hutch or storage cabinet on the perimeter of the room. A nice bar cart tucked against a wall or into a corner adds style and storage. Do not overwhelm the space with too many other pieces; choose one or two items besides your table to ensure your guests will have ample space when dining.

Living Room. When it comes to arranging your living room, it depends on the purpose of the space. Do you have a large TV or fireplace that is the focal point of the space? Or is it a room meant for quiet reading and conversation? Of course, it could be both, but if you watch TV often, you will want your couches and chairs to be balanced around it, so all can have an unobstructed view.

Leave enough room around sofas and chairs for entry and traffic, but close enough to allow for cozy chats. Always make sure there are tables nearby to accompany the seating and focus on balance. Group chairs together with an end table to create an additional seating area if you have the space, and don’t be afraid to place furniture toward the center of the room instead of always up against a wall.

Think in scale. A final tip that applies to all rooms in your house is to think about the size of the room and the size of the furniture. Use your best judgement here but try not to overwhelm a space with furniture that barely fits or that is so small that it gets lost.
